Here is a step by step guide on how to craft your Mancala board, a game that has been enjoyed by people for generations. Originating from Africa the name 'Mancala' is derived from the word 'naqala' which means 'to move' symbolizing the act of shifting pebbles or seeds across the board. This game involves two players, each controlling their designated side of the board, aiming to capture the seeds. While traditional Mancala boards can be intricate and artistically crafted, you can easily create your version using items found around your home. By making your Mancala board from scratch, you not only engage in a DIY project, but also get to experience the pleasure of playing without having to buy a premade board.

List of Materials Required

Crafting your Mancala board is an enjoyable do-it-yourself task that requires only a few basic supplies, most of which are probably already available in your household.

Here's what you will need:

  •  A carton of eggs with 12 compartments
  •  Two bowls (to serve as the Mancala pits)
  •  48 objects such as beads, buttons or marbles

Instructions for Making the Mancala Board

  1. Get the egg carton ready by taking off the lid and keeping the part that has the egg compartments. This will serve as your Mancala board, where each compartment acts as a pit.
  2. Arrange the pits by placing the egg carton between you and your opponent with the compartments facing you. Your side of the board consists of six pits in a row while your opponent's side has another row of six pits.
  3. Place a bowl at each end of the egg carton to act as your Mancalas (the banks) where players store their captured beads. Your Mancala is on your side, while your opponents are on their side.
  4. Before starting to play Mancala, make sure to distribute four beads into each of the 12 pits on the board, totaling 48 beads. Sit across from your partner with the egg carton in between to begin playing!

Engaging in a game of Mancala involves more than moving beads. It's a way to improve pattern recognition, mental math skills and strategic thinking. While playing, look out for any recurring patterns in how you play and strategize on how to secure a win.

You can personalize your Mancala board by giving a touch to the egg carton. For a feel,  consider setting up pits in sand or dirt and using pebbles instead of beads. To add a challenge, try strategizing your moves without revealing them to your opponent; this can help boost your math prowess.

Crafting your Mancala board is a project that brings the joy of games into your living space. All you need is an egg carton, a few bowls and some small items to create your Mancala board and delve into the pleasure of this timeless game. Whether you're new to Mancala or an experienced player, customizing your board will add that touch that enhances the gaming experience.
