This guide will help you understand the basics of Mancala and set you on the path to becoming a proficient player.
What is Mancala
To start, you have to find your bearings. So, what is Mancala all about? What is your mission?
Here’s the thing, Mancala has been around for centuries. It has origins tracing back to ancient Africa. Many Mancala gamers came before you, and many will come after! The game involves strategy, counting, and capturing. The goal is simple: capture more stones than your opponent.
The Mancala Board
The Mancala Board has two rows of pits. These are also known as houses. And there is a larger storage pit at each called a Mancal or Store.
Each player has 6 houses in front of them. And one Mancala to their right.
At the start of the game, you’ll find each house contains 4 stones. Right, Kapish? Great. Let’s get to the basics.
The Basic Rules
When you start playing Mancala Adventures
It’s important to decide who goes first. You, as well as the other player, control the six houses on their side and their Mancala.
Now make a Move
When it comes to your turn, pick up all stones from one of your houses. Then move and place one stone in each house you pass, including your own Mancala but remember to skip your opponent’s Mancala.
It’s all about Capturing Stones
So, this is how it essentially works. Say you have a stone, and it’s your last. And, it lands in an empty house, on your side… You capture that stone. And any other stones in the directly opposite house on your opponent’s side. Then place them all in your Mancala.
You can have an Extra Turn
Just so you’re clear. When you place your last stone, and it lands in your Mancala, you will get another turn.
How to End the Game
There has to be a winner! The game ends when all 6 houses on one side are empty. The player who still has stones left, captures them - then places it in their Mancala. The player who has the most stones in their Mancala wins.
